[ ramsey's infection doesn't happen until about three weeks to crisis, and after those 48 hours of being under his bloodwork spell, barry needs a timeout. what better way to have a timeout than go to earth-38?
hold up: he's not avoiding his friends. he's most certainly not avoiding iris. he's simply… taking a step away. getting some space, even some clarity… he can talk to cisco, caitlin, ralph, and iris about this, he simply… doesn't want to. the shame, the guilt, and the anger he holds towards himself for giving in and hurting them is something he can't face, so barry does what barry does best: he runs.
calling ahead of time (he can't just expect supergirl to be free, let alone kara danvers), barry literally runs to kara's place, making a pitstop at an ice-cream vendor. the ice-cream's dripping down the cone by the time he makes it to her front door and across her threshold, but luckily enough, supergirl's here to save the day.
embarrassing and unforgivable ice-cream crisis has been successfully averted. at least one of the inevitable crises can be ticked off their bucket list.
sitting at her kitchen table with a quarter of his ice-cream devoured, barry avoids straight up telling kara why he's here. he knows she wants to know, but thankfully for him, she's patient. in his own time he'll tell her. unlike oliver, she doesn't push, prod, or demand to know what he's done now. ]
Did you try the ice-cream on Earth-1? [ he assesses his ice-cream up close. ] I think you have better ice-cream. Your cones are crunchier.
[Kara knows Barry well enough at this point to know that he's not here for a quick pop in. If he was, he wouldn't be trying to kill time talking about ice cream. She also can tell when a hero's cage has been rattled, as looking in the mirror likely would have confirmed that she's been wearing the same face as of late.
Lena's turn is still rather fresh, and while they managed to stop Leviathan's plans for now, she knows that the story isn't going to end there.
But she's happy to play sounding board to Barry's problems for a little while, if it avoids having to think about her own.]

[ barry turns to face her with a dollop of ice-cream purposefully placed on his nose. wiping it with the back of his hand, he keeps his tone light, even if he looks down and shakes his head as if he's carrying the world on the back of his neck. ]

in fear she won't quite accept that as a reason (no one in their right mind really would), he makes it a point to ensure he takes a big lick of his ice-cream. he needs some creamy courage, okay. he wants to tell kara, but he also doesn't want to tell himself. if only he could separate himself by vibrating super quickly... ]
